Jean Yates    Watercolors

After graduating from the University of Maryland with a degree in Art Education, I went on to teach art in the public school system for many years. It was a terrific time for me to explore so many different areas of art, from pottery to fabrics to sculpture to painting. Once I left teaching however, my career path led me more into graphics, print and video production, and further away from the fine arts. It has only been in the past 10 years that I have been able to dust off those brushes and return to painting.

Although I first began painting in oils, I now work exclusively in watercolor. I love the clarity and transparency of watercolors, and often experiment with multiple washes and glazes to get a particular effect. The unpredictability of watercolors can be maddening, but it also produces wondrous surprises! I love the challenge of trying to control something that does not want to be controlled.

Lately my interest has been in taking small, simple things and painting them larger than life, focusing on the details that often go unnoticed. I also like painting scenes from favorite travel spots, for I feel like I'm visiting them all over again as I paint.
